Milner faces police coverage gap as department and city manager prepare to leave

MILNER, Ga. — The police department in this small Lamar County city is expected to stop operating Oct. 28 after all of its full-time officers resigned and most reserve officers also stepped down, City Manager Tausha Grose told the City Council on Monday.

Grose said she has filed her own resignation and will remain in the job through Oct. 30. Milner, about 45 miles southeast of Atlanta, has fewer than 1,000 residents. Its department had five people, including Police Chief Lamar Bunn.

The Lamar County Sheriff’s Office is expected to provide law enforcement coverage after the city department closes, according to information shared at the meeting.

Bunn said distrust of the mayor and council was among the reasons he resigned. He also accused Mayor Craig Timmons of placing a tracking device on his personal truck. The accusation was not independently substantiated in the information presented at the meeting.

Bunn said he did not ask other officers to quit. “I didn’t ask them to do it,” he said. “It’s not like I said, ‘Hey guys, let’s quit.’ No, I didn’t do that. So, I don’t know what needs to happen from here.”

The departures leave the city facing both a police staffing transition and a change in its top administrative post. Former council member Skip Seda said he would push to dissolve Milner’s municipal government if the city loses its police force and manager, questioning whether residents should continue paying city taxes.

City officials had not provided further details about the resignations or the transition plan in the information available after the meeting.
