Atlanta Technical College student dies after accidental campus shooting, police say

A 60-year-old student died and another student was wounded in a shooting at Atlanta Technical College on Oct. 19, according to Atlanta police.

Officers were called to the campus at 1560 Metropolitan Parkway SW around 8:45 a.m. after a report of a person being shot. They found the 60-year-old, identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office as Donald Silva, dead in a bathroom from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A second student had been shot in the leg and was taken to a hospital for treatment, police said.

Police said their preliminary investigation indicates Silva’s firearm discharged accidentally in a classroom, striking the other student. Silva then left the classroom and entered a bathroom, where he sustained the fatal wound. The investigation remains ongoing.
