Atlanta council committee advances 60-day extension of self-storage permit moratorium

ATLANTA — Atlanta City Council members Dustin Hills and Andrea L. Boone introduced a proposal Monday, Oct. 26, to extend the city’s moratorium on permits for new self-storage facilities by 60 days.

The measure received a “favorable” recommendation from the council’s Zoning Committee, according to committee documents, and will move to another step in the approval process. It has not yet been approved by the full council.

The current moratorium is scheduled to expire Jan. 11, 2027. If the extension passes, companies seeking permits to build new self-storage facilities would remain unable to apply until March.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens imposed an initial temporary halt through an executive order in June. The council approved a more formal 180-day moratorium in July, extending the pause into 2027. City leaders have framed the measure as a way to prioritize community needs.
