Atlanta community to honor teacher Hassan Kariem at Monday service
Hassan Kariem, a 42-year-old Atlanta Public Schools teacher who died in a fatal incident on Six Flags Over Georgia’s Goliath coaster, will be remembered Monday. The state investigation is ongoing, and the ride remains closed.
A celebration of life for Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, the 42-year-old Atlanta Public Schools teacher who died after being ejected from a roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia, is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, at the Atlanta Masjid of Al-Islam, 560 Fayetteville Road SE.
Kariem died Oct. 12 while riding the Goliath coaster with his niece. Several other parkgoers were injured in the incident. His body will be buried at a local cemetery after the service, according to his obituary.
Kariem was a father and a member of the Atlanta Public Schools community. The state insurance commissioner’s office is investigating what happened. Goliath is not operating during the investigation.
Six Flags has also temporarily closed nine rides across six parks that use restraints similar to Goliath’s lap restraint. Park management has said safety is its highest priority.
