Atlanta police investigate shooting that wounded 13-year-old at Capitol Vanira apartments

A 13-year-old boy was shot early Sunday at the Capitol Vanira apartments in Atlanta’s Summerhill neighborhood, where investigators estimate more than 100 shots were fired, police said.

The shooting happened at the complex in the 900 block of Hank Aaron Drive SW. The boy’s mother said her son was asleep when he was struck four times. Police said he was conscious when taken for medical treatment; his mother said he has since been released from the hospital and is expected to recover.

Investigators cordoned off the complex entrance as they examined the scene. Police had not identified a suspect or announced a possible motive as of Sunday.

The shooting follows other incidents involving young people in the area. In September, a 15-year-old was killed in a shooting next to the complex, which Atlanta police’s Gang Unit investigated. In April, a 3-year-old was fatally shot several blocks away.
