Washington counties offered optional Guard presence at election sites
Gov. Bob Ferguson has offered counties unarmed, out-of-uniform National Guard observers for ballot drop boxes and busy voting locations ahead of the November election. Counties can decide whether to participate, and the Guard members would observe rather than interact with voters.
SEATTLE — Washington counties may request unarmed, plainclothes National Guard observers at ballot drop boxes and other busy voting locations ahead of the November election, under an offer from Gov. Bob Ferguson.
In a letter to county auditors, Ferguson described the proposal as an “Election Neighborhood Watch.” Guard members would not approach voters or handle ballots; they would watch for problems and communicate with local authorities if needed. Counties would choose whether to take part.
Ferguson cited security concerns including an arson attack on a Clark County ballot drop box in 2024 that destroyed hundreds of ballots, as well as recent threats involving letters containing white powder sent to public officials, including Washington’s secretary of state.
The state’s National Guard has provided cybersecurity support for elections since 2016. The proposed observer role would extend that support to a physical presence at election sites, but only where counties request it.
Ferguson said counties opting in should notify his team in advance so Guard personnel have time to mobilize and determine where to deploy. The letter did not specify how many personnel might be available.
The offer comes as election officials prepare for another high-stakes voting season amid threats to election workers and voting infrastructure. Ferguson thanked county election workers, saying he was proud of the state’s safe and secure elections and of efforts to ensure every voter’s voice is heard.
