Powder-filled letter leads to evacuation at Adam Smith’s Kent office

Staff at U.S. Rep. Adam Smith’s district office in Kent evacuated Monday after receiving a letter containing a powdery substance, Smith said in a statement issued Oct. 19, 2026.

The Kent Police Department and Renton Fire Department responded. Smith, a Democrat who represents Washington’s 9th Congressional District, said the letter was “like others sent to Congressional offices across the country.”

His office said staff evacuated safely. It did not provide further information about the substance, whether anyone was exposed or the status of any investigation.
