Westport starts construction on elevated refuge for tsunami emergencies
Westport has broken ground on a tsunami evacuation tower designed to shelter more than 1,000 people. The project is intended to provide a place to reach safety during a potentially devastating tsunami.
Westport has begun construction of a tsunami evacuation tower that will be able to shelter more than 1,000 people, the town announced Oct. 5, 2026.
The structure is intended to serve as a refuge during a devastating tsunami, offering people in the Grays Harbor County coastal community an elevated place to evacuate to. The Washington Emergency Management Division provided an architectural rendering of the planned tower.
No construction schedule or project cost was included in the announcement.
