Two killed in plane crash in Aeneas Valley near Tonasket
A missing Piper Cub was found wrecked in Aeneas Valley near Tonasket on Sunday afternoon, and both men aboard were dead, authorities said. Washington State Department of Transportation search-and-rescue crews located the plane at about 4:30 p.m. The pilot was identified as 61-year-old Nicholas Grachanin; the passenger was Jim Merik. Their families have been notified. The aircraft departed Penticton, British Columbia, on Saturday and was headed to Grangeville, Idaho. The pilot lost contact with Seattle Center air traffic control during the flight. Grachanin’s daughter later reported the plane and its occupants missing to the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office. WSDOT’s Aviation Emergency Services team used the plane’s last known radar locations between Oroville and Okanogan, along with cell phone forensics, to focus the search. Ground teams from the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation joined the effort, alongside personnel from several agencies, including the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Management. “We extend our sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives,” said Tom Peterson, WSDOT’s air search-and-rescue coordinator and incident commander. He thanked the people and agencies who contributed to the search. The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the cause of the crash.
