Tacoma Narrows Bridge westbound lanes to close through Nov. 8 for joint repairs
Two westbound lanes and the Jackson Avenue ramp to SR 16 are scheduled to close starting about 5 a.m. Saturday as crews undertake extensive expansion-joint repairs. WSDOT warns of major delays and heavy congestion on nearby streets; the westbound HOV lane will be open to all drivers.
Drivers heading from Tacoma to Gig Harbor should plan for major delays as two westbound lanes on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge close for repairs beginning about 5 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. The Washington State Department of Transportation says the lanes are expected to remain closed through Nov. 8.
Crews will carry out extensive work on expansion joints on the 76-year-old bridge. WSDOT has relied on temporary emergency fixes, but the agency says those spot repairs are no longer working as needed. The Jackson Avenue ramp onto State Route 16 will also close during the work.
The westbound HOV lane will be available to all drivers while the closures are in effect. WSDOT is urging people to avoid unnecessary trips between Tacoma and Gig Harbor, and says streets near and approaching the bridge are likely to be heavily congested.
About 45,000 drivers use the westbound bridge each day. Four expansion joints have needed at least eight emergency repairs since 2024, according to information reported in April. State Rep. Jake Fey, chair of the House Transportation Committee, said at the time that officials had identified more than $180 million in needed work on the aging bridge.
