TACOMA, Wash. — Family and friends gathered Sunday, Oct. 25, at the Commerce Street parking garage where 16-year-old Josiah Midgyett was killed, bringing flowers, balloons and candles to remember him one week after the shooting.

Midgyett’s mother, Ebony Tucker, said her son played football and basketball, learned saxophone and was cherished by his family. “He was a good kid and touched a lot of hearts,” she said.

His brother, Ajani Tucker, called Midgyett his best man and said he had supported him through difficult times. His cousin, Kardee-A Rankins, remembered how Midgyett lifted his spirits, while his sister, Ajania Tucker, described him as kind and loving.

Tacoma police say as many as five masked gunmen opened fire Oct. 18 on a group gathered on an upper floor of the garage. Midgyett was killed. Prosecutors say the shooting was retaliation for Jose Campos being shot in the hand the night before.

Three adults have been arraigned on first-degree murder charges in Midgyett’s death: Jose Campos, 18; his brother, Davion Campos, 20; and Alina Guillen, 19. Police also arrested a juvenile suspect. The charges are allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Tucker said her son was not involved in gangs and called his death a tragedy. She said she wants those responsible to be held accountable.
