Speed suspected in fatal South Hill intersection collision
A 29-year-old driver died and a 22-year-old driver was hospitalized after two cars collided late Monday at 134th Avenue East and 144th Street East. Pierce County investigators say one vehicle may have been speeding and failed to stop at a stop sign.
A 29-year-old man was killed and a 22-year-old man was hospitalized after a two-car collision late Monday at a South Hill intersection, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded at about 11:10 p.m. to the crash at 134th Avenue East and 144th Street East. The sheriff’s office said the collision was a T-bone crash, and its Traffic Unit assisted with the investigation.
Preliminary findings indicate the 29-year-old was driving south on 134th Avenue East at a high rate of speed and did not stop at the intersection’s stop sign. A westbound car on 144th Street East had the right-of-way, investigators said, and struck the southbound vehicle.
The southbound driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver was taken to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
No arrests have been made. Investigators said impairment was not a factor for the 22-year-old driver. The investigation remains active.
