Seattle crews to restore 80 West Seattle Bridge lights after copper theft

Overnight work through Oct. 15 will repair about 80 streetlights left dark after copper wire was stolen from the West Seattle Bridge and Spokane Viaduct in June. The theft is part of a broader problem: the King County Sheriff’s Office investigated 241 copper-wire theft cases in 2025.

Seattle crews to restore 80 West Seattle Bridge lights after copper theft
Seattle crews are repairing about 80 streetlights on the West Seattle Bridge that have been out since copper wire was stolen from the bridge and Spokane Viaduct in June. Overnight lane and ramp closures are scheduled from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. on weekdays through Oct. 15. Prosecutors say 47-year-old Gary Wayne Galitzeck was caught on the bridge during the June theft. He was charged with malicious mischief, criminal impersonation and theft. Gary Ernsdorff of the King County Prosecutor’s Office said the stolen copper was worth about $1,000 and that the person appeared to be wearing a Seattle City Light vest. King County Prosecuting Attorney Leesa Manion said copper thefts affect utilities, businesses and homeowners. The King County Sheriff’s Office investigated 241 copper-wire theft cases in 2025. Ernsdorff said such thefts often happen at night, and stolen wire can be difficult to identify after it is removed. Seattle City Light says it plans to deter future thefts by installing reinforced junction-box covers, tamper-resistant lids and welded access doors. The scheduled overnight closures and lane restrictions are: - **Wednesday, Oct. 7:** The westbound West Seattle Freeway ramp from southbound SR 99 will close. The right lane of the westbound high-rise section will also close between the SR 99 on-ramp and the Harbor Avenue Southwest off-ramp. - **Thursday, Oct. 8:** The westbound Harbor Island ramp from SR 99 will close, with the same right-lane closure on the westbound high-rise section. - **Monday, Oct. 12:** Right-lane closures are scheduled on the westbound high-rise section between SR 99 and Harbor Avenue Southwest, and on the eastbound high-rise section between the Delridge Way Southwest on-ramp and the northbound SR 99 on-ramp. - **Tuesday, Oct. 13:** The eastbound high-rise right-lane closure will continue. The northbound SR 99 ramp from the eastbound West Seattle Freeway will close, with the two right lanes approaching it restricted for a detour. - **Wednesday, Oct. 14:** The northbound SR 99 ramp from the eastbound freeway will remain closed, with the two right approach lanes restricted. The right lane of the eastbound lower deck will also close between the First Avenue South and Fourth Avenue South ramps. - **Thursday, Oct. 15:** The right lane of the eastbound lower deck will close between the First Avenue South and Fourth Avenue South ramps. The work began earlier in the week, with separate overnight closures scheduled for Oct. 5 and 6.
