Rochester football game moved to Monday after gun threat; sheriff acknowledges juvenile custody lapse

ROCHESTER, Wash. — Rochester High School’s senior-night football game against Centralia has been rescheduled for Monday after a reported credible threat of gun violence led the school district to cancel Friday’s game, the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office said.

A school resource officer began investigating the threat Friday. Investigators established probable cause for a misdemeanor charge of disturbing school activities, according to the sheriff’s office, which said the investigation is continuing. Officials have not publicly described the threat or identified the 15-year-old, who is a juvenile.

Washington State Patrol located the teen during a traffic stop within an hour of the sheriff’s office’s initial update. The teen was arrested and taken to Thurston County Youth Services, but detention staff declined to book the juvenile because the alleged offense did not meet the facility’s booking threshold, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office said an internal communication failure followed, and the teen was released without deputies pursuing the matter further at that time. Sheriff Sanders said he learned late Saturday that the juvenile had been released. After speaking with Youth Services, he said, he was told staff could make an exception if the circumstances were documented on the booking form.

Sanders directed patrol deputies to find the teen and return the juvenile to detention. The sheriff’s office said that happened within 30 minutes, and the teen was booked into Youth Services.

“As Sheriff I take full responsibility for the breakdown in this incident,” Sanders said. The office plans an internal debrief in the coming weeks.

The rescheduled game is set for 6 p.m. Monday at Rochester High School. The sheriff’s office said it will increase law enforcement staffing at the game.

Anyone with information about the threat can call the sheriff’s office at 360-704-2740 or submit a tip through its online form.
