Hazmat crews clear Ballard building after dangerous CO₂ levels detected

Seattle firefighters secured a carbon dioxide leak at a commercial building in Ballard on Saturday, Oct. 17, after a CO₂ alarm prompted a hazmat response and crews found dangerous gas levels inside.

Fire crews were dispatched around 10:30 a.m. to the 5400 block of Ballard Avenue Northwest. Hazmat personnel entered to investigate while other firefighters worked to ventilate the building.

The leak was secured at about 12:30 p.m., according to the Seattle Fire Department. Hazmat crews then monitored indoor air and determined the building was safe to reoccupy. No injuries were reported.

The department did not identify the source of the leak or the type of business in the building.
