Two injured in stabbing at Highland Hospital emergency room
A man and a hospital security officer were stabbed in Highland Hospital’s emergency department lobby early Saturday. Both were treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening, and a suspect was arrested.
A man and a security officer were stabbed in the emergency department lobby at Highland Hospital in Oakland shortly before 2:30 a.m. Saturday, according to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.
The man, identified by KTVU as Joshua Parks, was reportedly attacked from behind while adjusting a friend’s crutches. Parks told the station he had wounds to his arm, back and neck. The sheriff’s office said he was stabbed four times.
A security officer intervened and was stabbed on the left side of the head while trying to detain the suspect, sheriff’s office Sgt. Roberto Morales said. The officer and a sheriff’s deputy later took the suspect into custody.
Both injured people were in stable condition, and their injuries were not life-threatening, Morales said. The suspect was booked into Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. The sheriff’s office is investigating and has not released additional details.
The circumstances that allowed the suspect to bring a weapon into the hospital lobby remain unclear, Morales said. “Although incidents of this nature are uncommon, the safety of the public and those who provide critical medical services remains a priority,” he said.
