San Jose couple faces neglect charges after 8-year-old dies during asthma emergency
Gabrielle Hanson and Jacob Randolph appeared in court Tuesday in connection with the May death of Aurora Williams. Prosecutors say the child went at least eight hours without medical help during an asthma attack and are urging Santa Clara County to strengthen child-protection coordination.
A San Jose mother and her husband appeared in Santa Clara County Superior Court on Tuesday to face multiple child-neglect charges in connection with the death of 8-year-old Aurora Williams. Neither Gabrielle Hanson nor Jacob Randolph entered a plea, according to court records and prosecutors.
Aurora died after an asthma attack in May. Court records say she was in medical distress for at least eight hours before the adults sought medical care. She died from a lack of oxygen to her brain, and the medical examiner classified the death as a homicide.
Investigators who searched the family’s home found six children living in what court documents described as squalid conditions. Authorities said there was no inhaler in the home and that Aurora’s respirator could not be used because it was filled with cockroaches. Prosecutors also cited mold and animal feces in the home.
“This little girl was filled with roaches, and there was also mold in the home, animal feces, and two parents who were not providing care or food for children,” Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen said.
Prosecutors have also charged Jonathan Hansen, identified by Rosen as Aurora’s uncle, in a separate case alleging he sexually abused and molested one of Aurora’s siblings. Hansen was living in the same home, Rosen said.
The case has prompted Rosen to call for a countywide team of specialists from multiple agencies to work together to protect children at risk. “This is a plan that would create a team of specialists who would work jointly to protect the most vulnerable like Aurora,” he said.
The neglect charges are allegations; Hanson and Randolph have not entered pleas.
