Two die after Van’s RV-7A crashes at Petaluma golf course
A two-seat aircraft crashed and caught fire at Rooster Run Golf Course shortly after taking off from Petaluma Municipal Airport Wednesday morning. Federal investigators are examining the crash, and nearby road closures were reported as emergency crews responded.
Two people died Wednesday morning when a small plane crashed at Rooster Run Golf Course in Petaluma, shortly after departing from Petaluma Municipal Airport, authorities said.
The Van’s RV-7A went down in a field at about 10:40 a.m. Petaluma police officers arrived to find the aircraft engulfed in flames, and firefighters extinguished the fire. Two people were found dead inside the plane, according to police. The Federal Aviation Administration said two people were aboard.
The airport is on Sky Ranch Drive, near the golf course. An airport employee said the plane had taken off from the airport.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating, with the NTSB leading the inquiry. No cause of the crash was provided.
Police urged people to avoid East Washington Street between Garfield Drive and Adobe Road while some nearby roads were closed. The department said it was thinking of the victims’ families and loved ones.
The RV-7A is a kit-built aircraft designed to carry two adults.
