Suspect in Tracy Gurdwara Kidnapping and Killing Arrested in Mexico, Two Others Still at Large
Alberto Alonso Alencastro was arrested in Mexico and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail in connection with the February abduction and killing of 57-year-old Avtar Singh, who investigators say was not the intended target. Two other indicted suspects remain outstanding.
A suspect wanted in connection with the February kidnapping and killing of a Tracy man has been arrested in Mexico, the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office announced Saturday.
Alberto Alonso Alencastro was taken into custody in Mexico and has since been booked into the San Joaquin County Jail, according to the sheriff's office. He is one of three people indicted in connection with the case.
Authorities say 57-year-old Avtar Singh was abducted from the Gurdwara Gur Nanak Parkash in Tracy on Feb. 17. His body was discovered a few days later in a remote area near Lake Berryessa in Napa County.
On Oct. 1, the sheriff's office announced that investigators had determined Singh was not the intended target of the abduction and killing. The disclosure raised troubling questions about how a member of the local Sikh community came to be taken from a house of worship and killed.
Two suspects remain outstanding, the sheriff's office said. They were identified as Alfonso Cresencio Segura Arellano and Barnabe Antonio Segura Arellano.
The sheriff's office is asking anyone with information about the case to contact its non-emergency line at 209-468-4400.
The arrest marks a significant development in a case that has shaken Tracy's Sikh community, which had gathered at the gurdwara on the morning Singh was taken. The killing of a man authorities now say was not the intended target has heightened concern about violence touching a sacred community space.
