Santa Clara University expands aid for California families earning under $150,000

Santa Clara University plans to cover the cost of a college education for eligible California students beginning in fall 2027, widening access to the private South Bay university for families who might otherwise consider it out of reach.

The expanded California Promise program will apply to admitted California applicants whose families earn less than $150,000 a year and have assets valued below $120,000. Final eligibility will be determined using information submitted through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA.

Cindy Tirado, the university’s director of financial aid, said Santa Clara has committed as a Jesuit institution to meeting students’ demonstrated financial need. She said the program could make the university an option for families who have not viewed private college as attainable.

The announcement does not specify how many students may qualify or provide a total cost for the expanded program. Prospective students must still meet the university’s admission requirements, as well as the financial criteria.
