Retired SFPD commander describes long family history of violence after Mannix killings

Retired SFPD Cmdr. Rich Corriea says his sister, former Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, and her daughter were killed amid years of escalating behavior by Ann’s husband, Sgt. Kevin Mannix. Police and family accounts cited in the report describe the deaths as an apparent murder-suicide; Corriea connected Kevin Mannix’s struggles to trauma in his childhood and family history.

Retired SFPD commander describes long family history of violence after Mannix killings

Retired San Francisco police Cmdr. Rich Corriea says a long history of violence and trauma in his family preceded the deaths of his sister, former Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, and her daughter. Ann’s husband, retired or serving SFPD Sgt. Kevin Mannix, allegedly killed them and then died by suicide, according to the report.

Corriea said the behavior had intensified over time but had been present for years. “The demons are his family demons,” he said, describing what he called a devastating childhood for Kevin Mannix and his siblings.

According to Corriea, Kevin Mannix’s father died when he was young, while his mother experienced severe mental health problems. The children were separated and sent to orphanages, he said. Corriea also described further violence and loss in the family: one brother died by suicide, another was killed in a robbery, and another family member killed his wife.

Corriea said he believes Kevin Mannix’s decades-long SFPD career helped contain the effects of that history on his mental health. His comments offer a family member’s account of the background to the killings; they do not establish a definitive cause. The report did not provide further details about the circumstances of the deaths or identify the daughter.
