Passenger wounded while intervening on 14 Mission says he would step in again
Bobby Meza says he intervened when a passenger appeared to touch a teenage girl on a Muni bus, then was cut with a box cutter. The man accused in the attack has been charged with attempted murder and remains in custody.
Bobby Meza was riding the 14 Mission bus to meet his girlfriend on Sept. 23 when he saw a passenger trying to put a hand under a teenage girl’s skirt, he said. The girl’s mother was shouting at the man to stop, but Meza said no one else stepped in.
The 43-year-old told the passenger to sit down and placed himself between the man and the girl and her mother. The man responded by attacking Meza with a box cutter, according to Meza, who initially thought he had been punched before noticing blood coming from his neck.
Meza said he has no regrets about intervening and would do it again. “I told him I fear no man, and no matter what, he’s not getting back to the women,” he said.
Glenn Hopkins, the man accused of attacking Meza, has been charged with attempted murder and remains in custody. The incident began with what Meza described as an attempted sexual battery aboard a crowded bus.
Several days after the attack, Meza was arrested in San Francisco on multiple outstanding warrants from Madera County, according to the account of his case. The warrants are separate from the charges against Hopkins.
