An OpenAI engineer is accused of planting a recording device in an executive conference room at the company’s San Francisco headquarters, federal prosecutors said Tuesday. Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, was arrested Friday and charged with using or attempting to use a device to intercept oral communications. He made his initial appearance in federal court Tuesday and remained in custody, according to the U.S. attorney’s office in San Francisco. OpenAI employees discovered a recorder around Sept. 30, prosecutors said. The device was plugged into a USB port behind a television and concealed in toilet paper, according to the criminal complaint. The company determined it had been installed around Sept. 28; its contents were encrypted. Investigators also found a separate recording device in an unattended bag at the company’s offices. The bag contained Alfozan’s wallet and identification, prosecutors said. Alfozan, a Saudi national, has worked as an engineer at OpenAI since July 2025, according to the filing. The allegations have not been proven in court.
