Muni fuel bill averaged $1.7 million a month as diesel prices climbed
San Francisco’s transit agency spent about 58% more on fuel from March through June than in the eight months before the Iran war. Its 556 diesel-using buses consume roughly 300,000 gallons of diesel monthly.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency spent an average of $1.7 million a month on fuel from March through June, about 58% more than its monthly average during the eight months before the Iran war, according to agency purchasing records.
The increase comes as disruptions linked to the war and a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz have constrained a major route for global oil shipments. Diesel prices have risen sharply: AAA figures show California’s average price climbed from $5.15 to $8.36 per gallon over the past year, a 62% increase.
Muni operates 856 buses, about two-thirds of them hybrid diesel-electric. The agency’s 556 buses that use fuel consume roughly 300,000 gallons of diesel each month, leaving the transit system exposed to swings in fuel prices.
The higher spending adds pressure to the agency’s operating costs, though the figures provided do not indicate whether the increase will affect service or fares.
