Marina flyers tout 900-home waterfront park plan, but sponsor is unclear

Flyers distributed on doorsteps and car windshields in San Francisco’s Marina District over the past week promote permanently closing all four lanes of Marina Boulevard to private vehicles. The proposed change, the flyers say, could make room for more than 900 homes and a car-free waterfront park with views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The leaflets describe the idea as inspired by Sunset Dunes, the park created after the Great Highway was closed to vehicle traffic. They also claim the proposal is aligned with the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, Sunset Dunes Park and the No on G campaign, which supports keeping vehicles off the Great Highway.

A disclosure on the flyers identifies Friends of Marina Park as the group that paid for them. The identity of the people behind the materials, however, remains unclear. The flyers appear to have been generated with artificial intelligence, according to descriptions of their circulation.

The proposal comes amid ongoing local debate over street access, public space and housing. The flyers present a vision of a car-free waterfront alongside substantial new housing, but the material provided no details about a formal city proposal or a process for approving such changes.
