eBay plans to eliminate about 1,000 jobs, including 9% of its workforce
San Jose-based eBay says it will cut roughly 1,000 positions, but has not disclosed which teams or locations will be affected. The layoffs follow several rounds of job reductions at the company since 2023.
San Jose-based eBay said Wednesday, Oct. 21, that it plans to lay off about 1,000 employees — roughly 9% of its workforce — without specifying which teams or locations will be affected.
The online marketplace said the cuts are intended to align staffing and resources with its strategic priorities. The company did not provide further details, which may emerge with its third-quarter financial results next week.
The announcement comes after several rounds of layoffs: about 500 jobs in February 2023, roughly 1,000 in January 2024 and another 800 this past February. The latest cuts add to uncertainty for Bay Area workers, though eBay has not said how many local positions are involved.
Some analysts see artificial intelligence as a factor in the wider wave of corporate job reductions. Tim Bajarin, an analyst with Creative Strategies, said AI may take on some administrative work, while noting that the cuts are difficult for affected employees.
Robert Chapman Wood, a San Jose State University strategic management professor, said the technology has not yet delivered the broad job growth or customer benefits associated with earlier waves of innovation. He described its economic effects as an unresolved challenge for Silicon Valley.
Despite its restructuring, eBay reported more than $3 billion in revenue and $552 million in profit in its most recent financial results. The company, known for its auction marketplace, has also been shifting toward higher-end merchandise.
