Oakland’s largest workplace standards settlement will pay 128 former hotel workers
Former workers at the now-closed Radisson near Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport are due more than $500,000 in unpaid wages and interest under a $600,000 settlement. The workers have yet to receive payment while the agreement’s terms are finalized.
A $600,000 settlement between Oakland’s Department of Workplace and Employment Standards and the company that owned the now-closed Radisson Hotel will provide back pay and interest to 128 former workers, city leaders and workers announced Wednesday at Oakland City Hall.
More than $500,000 is earmarked for the workers, with the remaining $100,000 covering legal fees. The city department says the agreement is the largest settlement in its history. The workers are still waiting for the money as the settlement terms are worked out.
The dispute dates to 2020, when workers, with help from the East Bay Alliance for a Sustainable Economy, filed complaints alleging wage theft and other labor violations. Workers said they had put in long hours without pay.
EBASE Executive Director Saabir Lockett said the settlement recognizes workers’ dignity and their right to fair pay. The hotel owner had not responded to a request for comment as of Wednesday.
