Caltrans crews tackle erosion repairs during Highway 37 shutdown

A stretch of Highway 37 between Mare Island and Sears Point was closed from Friday night through early Monday for work aimed at preparing the route for winter storms. Crews demolished part of the median and moved barriers as Caltrans plans to raise sections of the roadway by 3 feet to address erosion and reduce flooding risk.

A section of Highway 37 between Mare Island and Sears Point was closed beginning Friday night, Oct. 23, as Caltrans crews carried out work intended to help keep the North Bay route open during winter storms. The closure was scheduled to last until early Monday, Oct. 26, forcing drivers to take detours over the weekend.

Caltrans said crews demolished part of the median and shifted concrete K-rail barriers to change traffic patterns and make room for upcoming repairs. The agency plans to shore up the road and raise portions of it by about 3 feet.

Clayton Warren of Caltrans said the work is meant to help prevent flooding and keep the highway usable during El Niño and other winter storms. The agency said it noticed asphalt erosion during the summer and developed a plan to address the problem.

Highway 37 is a key North Bay connection. Caltrans said the weekend work was part of its storm-preparation effort; additional work to lift sections of the road is still to come.
