Peter Taraba, 48, was sentenced to 16 months in state prison for setting a fire at the Berkeley Animal Shelter in June. The fire caused a two-month closure, but no animals were injured, and the shelter has reopened.
A 48-year-old man has been sentenced to 16 months in state prison for setting fire to the Berkeley Animal Shelter in June, an incident that forced the facility to close for two months.
Surveillance video showed Peter Taraba breaking a shelter window with a rock and starting a fire with what investigators described as an improvised incendiary device.
Investigators said police seized Taraba’s dog the day before the fire. Taraba was arrested after returning to the shelter the following day.
No animals were hurt. The shelter has since reopened.
