Rhode Island inmate gets eight years for 2024 ACI walkaway
Joshua Torres was sentenced to eight years after pleading no contest to escape-related charges stemming from his departure from an outdoor work detail at the state prison in Cranston. He was later found at a West Greenwich motel.
Joshua Torres was sentenced to eight years in prison after walking away from an outdoor work assignment at Rhode Island’s Adult Correctional Institutions in 2024.
Torres pleaded no contest Oct. 9 to charges of assault or escape by a custodial unit inmate and felony conspiracy, according to court records. Associate Justice David Cruise imposed four years on each count, to be served consecutively, for a total of eight years.
Torres left the work detail at the ACI’s central warehouse on Power Road in Cranston on Oct. 10, 2024. He was housed in minimum security and was serving a sentence on a gun charge. Authorities later found him at a Super 8 motel in West Greenwich.
Torres had been scheduled for release in March 2027 before the new sentence was imposed.
