Providence crash ends with arrest after suspect runs onto I-95, police say
Nelson Pires faces several charges after a crash near Point Street, a foot pursuit and an alleged punch to a Providence detective, police said. A Warwick officer arrested him in the northbound lanes of I-95 on Monday afternoon.
A man was arrested on Interstate 95 in Providence on Monday afternoon after a car crash, a foot pursuit and an alleged assault on a detective, according to police.
Providence police said officers responded around 12:45 p.m. to a crash near 1 Hoppin St. involving a 2019 Toyota Camry linked to a pursuit that Warwick police had stopped. The car exited northbound I-95 at Point Street at high speed, crossed both lanes of the street and went down an embankment into the Coro Building parking lot, police said. The Camry sustained significant front-end damage.
Police identified the driver as Nelson Pires. They said he fled into a nearby parking garage, then ran toward I-95 as Providence officers located him. During the foot pursuit, Pires allegedly punched a Providence detective in the face. The detective did not need medical treatment, police said.
Pires entered the northbound highway lanes and was apprehended by a Warwick officer with assistance from Providence officers, according to police. He had a minor cut to his forehead and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment.
Pires faces charges of violating a no-contact order involving a female passenger, simple assault on a detective, obstruction, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Police said he also had an active bench warrant from Lincoln.
Warwick police are handling initial reckless-driving and eluding charges in coordination with Providence prosecutors. Providence traffic officers are investigating the crash. The charges are allegations; the case has not been resolved in court.
