An elderly woman from Blackstone, Massachusetts, escaped her sedan before a freight train struck it Sunday night, after she mistakenly drove onto the tracks near Woonsocket’s River Street crossing, police said.
The driver was trying to turn from River Street onto Verry Street on Oct. 11 when her car became stuck on the tracks. She got out before the train reached the vehicle.
Police said the train was moving slowly and its conductors stopped quickly, but not before it hit the sedan. The crossing remained closed for several hours as officers waited for railroad company supervisors to arrive. The train also blocked the crossing at 2nd Avenue.
