Tony Stubblefield to lead Oregon Ducks after Dana Altman’s immediate retirement
Dana Altman is retiring as Oregon men’s basketball coach, effective immediately, the university announced Wednesday, Oct. 7. Assistant coach Tony Stubblefield will lead the Ducks during the 2026-27 season, with a national search for a permanent successor planned for after the season. Altman, 68, took over before the 2010-11 season and leaves with a 382-182 record at Oregon, the most wins by a coach in program history. The Ducks reached the NCAA Tournament nine times under Altman, including a run to the Final Four in 2017, and won four Pac-12 regular-season titles and four conference tournament titles. In a statement, Altman said leaving Oregon was a difficult decision and that he would miss the players, coaches and fans. His overall record across 37 years as a head coach is 792-425. Before moving to Eugene, he coached Creighton for 16 years. The retirement follows a difficult season for Oregon, which finished 12-20. The program also lost nine players to the transfer portal and three to graduation in the offseason. Stubblefield has served two stints as an assistant at Oregon under Altman. He left in 2021 to become DePaul’s head coach, a role he held through 2024, before returning to the Ducks. Athletic director Rob Mullens praised Altman’s record and contributions to Oregon student-athletes and the university.
