Dana Altman steps down from Oregon after 16 seasons, 382 wins
Dana Altman is retiring as head coach of the University of Oregon men’s basketball team, the university announced Wednesday, Oct. 7. His departure takes effect immediately, and assistant coach Tony Stubblefield will lead the Ducks on an interim basis for the season, UO Athletics said. Altman, 68, became Oregon’s coach for the 2010-11 season and leaves as the winningest coach in program history, with 382 victories. His teams reached the NCAA tournament nine times, including a run to the Final Four in 2017 — Oregon’s first appearance at that stage since 1939. In a statement, Altman said leaving Oregon was a painful decision but one he believed was right. He said he would miss his players, coaching staff and fans, and described leading the Ducks as the honor of his life. Altman had spent nearly five decades coaching, according to his statement. Before coming to Oregon, he coached at Creighton, which he said his family had loved. His retirement leaves Oregon with an immediate leadership change as the team prepares to continue its season under Stubblefield.
