Wounded Silver Rail teacher says she was shot before she could help students
Becky Drury says she was struck at close range as she tried to return to her classroom during the attack, leaving her unable to protect herself or the children. Her account comes as Bend-area schools reopen and police continue investigating the shooting that killed four people.
A teacher wounded in the shooting at Silver Rail Elementary says she was shot before she could help protect students in her special education classroom, correcting reports that she had shielded a child during the attack.
Becky Drury, who remains hospitalized, described what she remembers in a statement released Wednesday through a family friend. She said she ran to see what was happening, saw the shooter and rushed back toward the classroom. As she tried to close the door, the gunman was already there and shot her at close range, she said.
Drury said her left hand was nearly severed and her other arm was also badly injured. Unable to stand or defend herself or anyone else, she pretended to be dead in hopes the shooter would not fire again.
“I was shot before I had any chance to act,” she said, referring to conflicting reports about her actions. Drury urged news organizations to rely on trusted community voices and report the events accurately and respectfully, saying that matters to the community’s recovery.
The attack last Thursday at the Bend school killed three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a teacher. Another student was critically injured. Authorities identified the suspect as 16-year-old Griffin J. John II, a former Silver Rail student.
Police have said another teacher threw her phone at the gunman, then tackled him and struggled with him for control of the weapon. A father who followed the gunman into the building shot him, authorities said.
Schools across the Bend-La Pine district, except Silver Rail, reopened Wednesday, with officers present to greet students, police said. Investigators are serving search warrants at the suspect’s home and examining his electronic devices and social media accounts. Police have confirmed the shotgun used in the attack was legally purchased but say they are still investigating how the teenager obtained it.
Drury said her thoughts are with those injured, the families of those killed, the school and the wider Bend community. She and her family also asked for privacy as she begins what she described as a long recovery.
