Two people arrested after machete-and-gun dispute on MAX at Gateway

A dispute aboard a TriMet MAX train at Portland’s Gateway Transit Center led to the arrests of two passengers on Oct. 15, including a 45-year-old man accused of threatening another passenger with a machete, according to court documents.

Transit police responded to a report of a fight near Northeast 99th Avenue and Northeast Glisan Street. Officers found Tobias Ceasar Pacheco aboard the train holding a machete and arrested him, according to a probable cause affidavit.

After his arrest, Pacheco told officers he had cut the other passenger’s face with the weapon, the affidavit says. He also said he believed the passenger had a gun and told police he had gone for the person’s head and neck, adding that he wanted to “take his head off.” The statements are described in court records; the allegations have not been established in court.

The other passenger, whom officials have not identified and described as a youth, ran from officers and hid behind cars in a nearby parking structure, according to the affidavit. The youth raised their hands and said they did not have a gun, but officers found that they did and took them into custody. The records described in the affidavit do not specify whether the youth faced charges.

Pacheco faces charges including second-degree attempted murder, first-degree attempted assault, interfering with public transportation and unlawful use of a weapon. He was arraigned Oct. 16 and is being held without bail pending a preventive detention hearing.

Court records show Pacheco was convicted of criminal mischief in Clackamas County in 2022 and driving under the influence in Multnomah County in 2020. The current charges remain allegations, and Pacheco is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
