Bend police revise Silver Rail classroom count after shooting
Police say a student and an adult also escaped the Silver Rail Elementary classroom unharmed, bringing the reported number of people inside to nine. Three students and a teacher were killed, and another student and teacher were injured.
Bend police say a student and an adult who were in the classroom targeted in the Oct. 15 shooting at Silver Rail Elementary escaped without injuries, adding two people to the previously reported count of those inside.
The new tally is five children and four school staff members, not including the suspected shooter, Bend Police spokesperson Sheila Miller said Monday. Police had said at an Oct. 16 news conference that three adults and four students were in the classroom. Miller said the newly identified adult and student got out, but she could not explain how.
Three students and one teacher were killed. Another student and teacher were injured. The suspected shooter, 16-year-old Griffin John II, was killed by a bystander, officials have said. Authorities said the attack was confined to the special-needs classroom. A motive has not been disclosed.
John had previously attended Silver Rail as well as Elk Meadow Elementary, Pilot Butte Middle School and the former Bend Tech Academy, according to Bend-La Pine Schools spokesperson Scott Maben. John was last enrolled in the district in November 2025, Maben said.
Officials have said John was once a special-needs student at Silver Rail. The newly released classroom count adds to the public record of who was present during the shooting, as the Bend community continues to mourn those killed and injured.
