A city-contracted team found what appeared to be human remains Tuesday morning near Southwest Harvey Milk Street and Naito Parkway, prompting an investigation by Portland police homicide detectives.
The discovery came during a return visit to the downtown site. The team cleared an encampment there Monday, then was called back Tuesday after additional personal belongings were found, police spokesperson Mike Benner said. At about 9:15 a.m., workers spotted what appeared to be human remains and contacted the medical examiner and police.
“Right now, we don’t know what we have,” Benner said, describing the find as troubling to detectives. He declined to provide further details about the remains.
Police said they have no indication that someone is carrying out violent attacks around the city. The investigation is ongoing.
