Portland’s ‘Thrill the World’ dance returns Oct. 24 with fundraiser for Hygiene4All
The 20th annual Portland celebration will bring dancers to a Northeast Portland basketball court for Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and a fundraiser supporting unsheltered residents. Weekend rehearsals are open to beginners.
Portland dancers will mark two decades of the city’s “Thrill the World” celebration on Saturday, Oct. 24, with performances of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and a fundraiser for Hygiene4All, a hygiene hub serving unsheltered people in the Central Eastside.
The event will take place at the basketball court near Northeast Seventh Avenue and Fremont Street. The program is set to include DJ Prashant’s Bollywood Thriller troupe, the group’s regular performance of the zombie dance and two additional reprises.
People who want to join can attend rehearsals Saturdays and Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the court. Organizers teach the full choreography at each practice, and no dance experience is required. A $5 donation per dancer is invited for Hygiene4All, which describes itself as being run by and for its homeless neighbors.
The Portland gathering is part of an international tradition that began in Toronto in 2006 with 62 dancers attempting a world record. The following year, 1,722 people in 52 cities across five continents performed the routine simultaneously. The project has since used the shared dance as a way to bring together people across backgrounds.
For Portland participants, the annual event pairs a pop-culture spectacle with local mutual aid, directing donations to an organization serving neighbors who often lack reliable access to hygiene facilities.
