Portland adds Eastside business corridors to sidewalk sanitation service
Portland’s sidewalk-cleaning program is expanding along 82nd and 122nd avenues, Northeast Sandy Boulevard, Southeast Division Street and other East Portland corridors. The city says the service now reaches about 70 business districts and has removed 260 tons of garbage since launching last year.
Portland has expanded its sidewalk-cleaning program into additional East Portland business corridors, including sections of 82nd and 122nd avenues, Northeast Sandy Boulevard and Southeast Division Street, city officials said Oct. 10.
Crews will collect litter, sweep sidewalks, remove graffiti and human waste, and pressure-wash outdoor surfaces. Service may occur as often as once a week, according to the city.
“East Portland has been asking for this,” said Anne Hill, who oversees the program through the city’s Public Environment Management Office. “Now we have the crews and the contracts to deliver it.”
The expansion is intended to bring extra sanitation services to commercial areas that city officials say have historically been overlooked or underserved. Local contractors Cultivate Initiatives and Junk It Junk Removal were selected to carry out the work.
The program launched last year as part of Mayor Keith Wilson’s broader effort to improve street cleanliness and safety. With the expansion, it will serve about 70 business corridors. City officials say crews have removed 260 tons of garbage from sidewalks so far.
Portland lists the corridors covered by the service on the Public Environment Management Office website.
