Four killed in Silver Rail Elementary shooting as Bend gathers to mourn
Three children and a teacher were killed Thursday at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend. A 16-year-old suspected shooter was also killed, and two people were critically injured; hundreds gathered at Drake Park that evening for a vigil.
A shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend on Thursday killed three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a teacher, sending families scrambling for information and prompting a candlelight vigil where hundreds gathered to grieve.
A 16-year-old suspected shooter was killed at the scene by an armed community member, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said at a news conference. A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were critically injured and taken to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.
The first call to Deschutes County dispatchers came at 12:59 p.m. from a person in a vehicle outside the school, reporting that someone with a long gun was shooting at them in the parking lot. Police sent an alert to area law enforcement at 1 p.m., and the school went into lockdown about a minute later. More calls reported that the shooter had entered the building.
Officers arrived at 1:02 p.m. Krantz said a community member who saw the suspect enter the school followed him and shot him before officers reached the scene.
Erin Johnson, who lives next door to the school, said she heard gunfire and then a neighbor screaming. Johnson, a military veteran, recalled hearing “three shots and then two shots.”
As officers searched the campus and escorted students onto buses, children were taken to Journey Church, the designated reunification center, where families waited to be reunited with them. The school is in a residential area on Bend’s east side.
By evening, people filled the amphitheater at Drake Park for prayers, songs and a candlelight vigil. Local clergy gathered to pray, while families and neighbors held candles and mourned together. Gov. Tina Kotek also attended.
Adam Jorgensen, who came with two friends, said the gathering was intended to offer support and hope. “The entire city of Bend is here together,” he said.
Kevin Desrosiers attended with his daughters and said he knew the family of the 5-year-old who died. The shooting, he said, made the danger feel painfully close: “You never want to say goodbye to your kids in the morning and even assume that you wouldn’t see them again at the end of the school day.”
