BikePortland founder Jonathan Maus to leave reporting role as site continues
Jonathan Maus, who launched BikePortland in 2005, says he will step away from active journalism. The Portland site plans to keep publishing articles and opinion pieces submitted by others.
Jonathan Maus, founder of Portland cycling website BikePortland, plans to step away from active journalism while the site continues publishing, he said in an announcement reported Oct. 22, 2026.
Maus said he intends to keep publishing submitted articles and opinions, but will not return to his former role as an active journalist and “community concierge.” The announcement did not specify who will manage the site or how its coverage will change.
Maus launched BikePortland.org in 2005, during a period of growing energy in the city’s cycling community. The site has covered a subject closely tied to Portland’s transportation choices and public space. Its continued publication could preserve a platform for local cycling news and community voices, though its future editorial operations remain unclear.
