Vance announces green-card sponsorship restrictions on Microsoft and seven other tech firms
The Trump administration has barred Microsoft, Adobe and six other technology companies from sponsoring H-1B visa holders for employment-based green cards, Vice President JD Vance and Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling announced Thursday, Oct. 8, 2026. The other companies named are Cognizant, Infosys, Tata, Wipro, HCL Technologies and Capgemini. Sonderling announced Adobe’s suspension during a press conference focused on visa fraud. Vance accused Microsoft of discriminating against U.S. workers by prioritizing foreign employees. “You’re a great American company, but you’ve got to hire great American workers,” he said. The action targets employers’ ability to sponsor H-1B workers for permanent residency; the announcement did not say that the companies were barred from hiring foreign workers altogether. The information released at the press conference did not specify the duration of the restrictions or detail the evidence behind the decisions.
