Trump says he is considering removing Guilfoyle as U.S. ambassador to Greece
President Donald Trump said Monday his administration is considering the future of Kimberly Guilfoyle, following a report alleging she asked a Republican donor to pay a $100,000 credit-card bill. Guilfoyle’s lawyer disputed the reported messages and said the money was owed for speaking engagements before her nomination.
President Donald Trump said Monday he is considering whether to remove Kimberly Guilfoyle as U.S. ambassador to Greece, after a report alleged she pressed a Republican donor to pay a $100,000 American Express bill while offering access to senior administration officials.
“We’re looking at it,” Trump told reporters at the White House when asked whether he might dismiss Guilfoyle. “We’re not happy.”
The allegations were reported last week by The Wall Street Journal. Guilfoyle’s lawyer disputed the authenticity of messages cited in the report and said the money was owed for speaking engagements she completed before being nominated as ambassador. The donor denied that explanation, according to the report.
The State Department, which oversees U.S. embassies, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump’s remarks or Guilfoyle’s position.
Guilfoyle is serving as the U.S. envoy in Athens. Secretary of State Marco Rubio joined her at an embassy ceremony there on Oct. 7. Trump’s comments put her job in question amid allegations concerning a donor’s payment and possible access to government officials; the claims remain disputed.
