Senate expected to expand staff AI access with Anthropic’s Claude

The Senate is expected to make Claude available to staff, adding Anthropic’s chatbot to tools that include ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot. The timing remains unclear as congressional offices weigh how to use AI for official work.

Senate expected to expand staff AI access with Anthropic’s Claude

Senate staff are expected to gain access to Claude, the artificial intelligence chatbot made by Anthropic, according to two people familiar with the plan. The timing of the rollout has not been determined publicly.

If implemented, the move would add another option to the AI tools available to congressional offices. Senate Sergeant at Arms Jennifer Hemingway told lawmakers in April that staff already had access to Microsoft Copilot, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

Hemingway also said her office was leading a working group examining the legislative branch’s AI uses and needs. The Senate Sergeant at Arms and the House Chief Administrative Officer provide technology support to their respective chambers, and both have issued internal guidance on staff use of AI for official business.

The expansion comes as individual congressional offices consider how to use generative AI in their work. The available information does not specify what tasks Senate staff may use Claude for or what safeguards will apply to its use.
