U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff is using some of his fundraising network to support Georgia Democrats beyond his own reelection bid, including efforts to win the governor’s office and strengthen the party’s position in the state legislature. A Sept. 16 fundraiser in Washington drew a few hundred donors and supporters and was organized to benefit the Democratic Party of Georgia and its coordinated campaign, according to an Ossoff aide and an attendee who was granted anonymity to discuss the private event. Ossoff has held similar fundraisers over the past two years and plans to host more before Election Day, a person familiar with his plans said. The events come in the final stretch before November’s midterm elections, when Georgia Democrats are seeking to take the governor’s office for the first time in more than 20 years and improve their legislative margins. The senator’s work for the broader party effort comes as he is also seeking reelection and has built a substantial campaign fund of his own. The timing of the state-party fundraising, weeks before voters go to the polls, suggests his campaign is putting resources and attention toward the wider Democratic ticket as well as his Senate race.
