Arizona Democrats Secure Historic Trifecta as Voters Flip Both Legislative Chambers
Democrats won control of the Arizona House and Senate while Gov. Katie Hobbs secured reelection, giving the party unified state government for the first time since 1966. The GOP had held the House for six decades and the Senate since the early 1990s.
PHOENIX â Arizona Democrats have won control of both chambers of the state Legislature and retained the governor's office, securing the party's first state government trifecta since 1966, according to the latest election projections.
Gov. Katie Hobbs won reelection in the midterms, defeating Republican Andy Biggs. Meanwhile, both the state Senate and House flipped blue, ending decades of Republican dominance in the Legislature. The GOP had held the House for 60 years and the Senate since the early 1990s.
According to projections from The Associated Press, Democrats hold 17 seats in the Senate, giving them the majority. In the House, Democrats hold 31 seats, also a majority.
The legislative flips were part of broader national Democratic gains. The party secured offices in at least six states where they previously shared power with Republicans, including the battleground states of Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Wisconsin. Democrats also won control of both chambers of Congress.
In Texas, Democrats won control of the state House, which Republicans had held since 2003, and elected Gina Hinojosa as the state's first Democratic governor since George W. Bush defeated Ann Richards in 1994. Republicans held onto the Texas Senate.
Democrats will also hold the governor's office in at least 28 states, with results still pending in Alaska and Kansas.
The trifecta gives Arizona Democrats unified control of state government for the first time in six decades, a shift that could reshape policy priorities on issues including education, housing, water management and climate resilience. With a Democratic governor and Democratic majorities in both chambers, the party will be able to advance legislation that previously stalled under divided government.
The results reflect a significant political realignment in a state long considered a Republican stronghold. Arizona has trended competitive in recent cycles, and Tuesday's outcome signals that Democrats have consolidated gains in the fast-growing, diversifying state.
All results are based on the latest midterm election projections from The Associated Press.
