UArizona bars Sigma Phi Epsilon from activities during misconduct investigation

The University of Arizona placed its Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter on interim activities suspension Wednesday, Oct. 21, as the school investigates allegations involving parties, alcohol and sexual assault.

Under the restriction, the fraternity may not host, attend, take part in or sponsor activities, including parties. The university also directed members not to contact people identified as alleged victims or their families. The chapter must schedule a meeting with the Dean of Students Office by Oct. 26.

The university alleges that the fraternity held parties on Aug. 26 and Sept. 29 and provided alcohol to people under 21. Separately, a woman has accused two fraternity members of raping her at the Aug. 26 gathering. The allegations have not been established as findings of responsibility.

A search warrant from the University of Arizona Police Department identifies the fraternity house at 1614 E. First St. as the location of the alleged assault. The woman, who belongs to a nearby sorority, told investigators she woke in a dark room without pants or underwear and saw two men having sex with her. She said she did not remember consenting and thought she may have asked them to stop, though she was unsure.

“Reports of sexual assault are deeply concerning to our campus,” Vice President for Student Affairs Amanda Kraus said in a statement. She said student safety and well-being are the university’s top priority and that students deserve to feel safe and supported.

The latest action follows a period of university discipline. In May, Sigma Phi Epsilon was placed on probation after hazing allegations that included sleep deprivation, forced drinking, kidnapping and forced calisthenics, as well as alleged illegal drug use. The fraternity acknowledged a history of hazing concerns and said it had taken steps to address them, including appointing a new chapter adviser in fall 2025 and new student leaders in spring 2026.

The interim suspension is in place while the university’s case proceeds; it is not a final determination on the allegations.
