Arizona DPS footage captures accounts before Rebekah Baptiste’s death
Newly released body-camera footage records Rebekah Baptiste’s father and his girlfriend describing her health and the search for her before the 10-year-old was found gravely injured in Holbrook. Both now face murder and child-abuse charges; their trial is scheduled for April 2027.
HOLBROOK, Ariz. — More than a year after 10-year-old Rebekah Baptiste was found gravely injured in Holbrook, newly obtained Arizona Department of Public Safety body-camera footage records her father and his girlfriend recounting events in the days before she was hospitalized and died.
Rebekah was found in July 2025 and flown to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, where she died days later. Her father, Richard Baptiste, and his girlfriend, Anicia Woods, are accused of murder and child abuse. The charges are allegations, and the two have not been convicted.
In the footage, Woods told a state trooper Rebekah had previously run away and had a history with the Arizona Department of Child Safety. She said the family had moved to a remote area of Apache County, near River Meadows Ranch, two or three weeks earlier, while a DCS case was open.
Woods described Rebekah disappearing after the family got up in the morning. “Before I could even turn around to get waters and bottles and tell the boys to go to the bathroom she was gone,” she told the trooper. Asked whether the family searched for her, Woods said they called neighbors.
She also described difficulty getting Rebekah to drink, saying she had been trying to give her water with a sponge and that Rebekah choked when offered a straw. Police records cited in prior reporting said the girl was found bruised, not breathing and appearing malnourished.
The footage adds to earlier accounts recorded by Holbrook police. In that video, Baptiste told officers Rebekah had been running away. The DPS footage was released more than a year after the incident, following a request for help from Rebekah’s family, according to the reporting.
The case has drawn scrutiny over child-welfare oversight. Rebekah’s Valley school reported concerns of possible abuse or neglect involving her or her two brothers 12 times, according to earlier reporting. The circumstances and response to those reports have been part of public questions about the family’s history with DCS.
The trial for Baptiste and Woods has been postponed several times and is currently set for April 2027.
