Two hospitalized after shooting outside Mesa reception hall; Scottsdale police to investigate officer gunfire
A boy and a man were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after gunfire outside Versalles Reception Hall early Saturday. Police say the incident began when the boy was turned away from a private event and fired at a security guard.
Two people were hospitalized after a shooting involving a security guard and an off-duty Mesa police officer outside Versalles Reception Hall early Saturday, according to police.
The shooting happened around 1:05 a.m. near Main Street and Stapley Drive. Police said a boy tried to enter a private event at the Mesa venue but was turned away. He then pulled out a handgun and fired at a security guard.
The boy ran toward a vehicle, and the guard and off-duty officer pursued him and fired, police said. The boy continued south across Main Street, where an on-duty Mesa officer contacted him. Police said the boy took out a handgun and threw it to the ground before officers detained him.
The boy was taken to a hospital with apparent gunshot wounds that were not considered life-threatening. A man inside a vehicle associated with the boy was also hit by gunfire and hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
The security guard and off-duty officer were not injured. Police reported no injuries to bystanders.
The Scottsdale Police Department will lead the investigation into the shooting through the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team, a multi-agency group that investigates critical incidents involving law enforcement. Mesa police are investigating the aggravated assault that preceded the shooting.
